The Space Between Our Hands
2012
Snow balls in a snow room, portrait of a community.
Casting the space between a person's clasped hands.
In the winter of 2012, I spent four weeks with artist Ross Coulter and coordinating curator Angela Pye on a residency project in the Echigo-Tsumari region of Japan. Our criteria was to engage with the mainly elderly and depopulated communities of the region and to work with snow. For three weeks we traveled the region, visiting with community groups and collecting snow cast portraits of the people we were meeting. The Space Between Our Hands is the outcome of this residency project. Presented at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field Snow Festival in Matsudai, February 2012.
